AMERICAN REF-FUEL STRENGTHENS ITS LEADING EHS AND OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAMS WITH ENVIANCE

System will streamline incident and corrective action management; improved time-to-resolution, root cause discovery among anticipated benefits

CARLSBAD, CA and MONTVALE, NJ - November 17, 2004 - Enviance, the leading provider of Internet-based, on demand systems for the management of environmental, health and safety (EHS) compliance activities, today announced that American Ref-Fuel Company, the largest provider of waste-to-energy services in the northeastern U.S., has selected the Enviance System to assist the company in managing its corporate safety, environmental and operational activities.

American Ref-Fuel is the owner/operator of six major waste-to-energy facilities in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. The company handles approximately 5 million tons of waste each year, reducing the volume of incoming waste by more than 90 percent and dramatically decreasing the need for land-based disposal. American Ref-Fuel's plants convert renewable solid waste into enough power to meet the ongoing requirements of over 350,000 homes while conserving the equivalent of 72 millions gallons of fuel oil annually.

The Enviance System will enhance American Ref-Fuel's operational excellence and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) participation-already among the nation's best with five VPP Star facilities. The Enviance System will be rolled out across the entire organization of 700 employees to automate previously manual, paper-driven processes related to operational incident reporting and corrective actions, including safety, environmental and equipment-related deviations.

The system provides the company a means to assign and track progress of corrective tasks, measure the performance of the corrective action process and analyze incident data to identify trends and improve performance.

By using Enviance to create a centralized repository for tracking and reporting on all plant incidents and subsequent action items, American Ref-Fuel will be able to streamline its processes, promote collaboration, create enterprise-wide standards, and develop and maintain institutional knowledge. The Enviance System will also allow faster resolution of incidents and improved ability to determine root cause.
