FirstEnergy wanted to address environmental compliance challenges in an efficient, effective way, while also supporting the company’s corporate programs, sustainability goals and reporting needs
The programs for which FirstEnergy currently uses Enviance include SPCC, Title V, NPDES, SARA, dredging, and other general regulatory tasks and obligations.
As a diversified energy company, FirstEnergy Corp.’s subsidiaries and affiliates are involved in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, as well as energy management and other energy-related services. The company’s seven electric utility operating companies comprise the nation’s fifth largest investor-owned electric system, serving 4.5 million customers within 36,100 square miles of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Controlling more than 14,000 megawatts of capacity, FirstEnergy is continuously exploring technologies to improve customer service, reduce costs and increase revenues.
As part of this effort, FirstEnergy wanted to address environmental compliance challenges in an efficient, effective way, while also supporting the company’s corporate programs, sustainability goals and reporting needs. The company first considered existing programs, such as SAP, but determined they did not have the preferred functionality for comprehensive environmental management. FirstEnergy wanted a system that could effectively manage compliance obligations, maintain institutional knowledge, improve knowledge transfer, and ensure regulatory responsibilities aren’t forgotten. The company selected the Enviance Environmental ERP system to meet these needs.
Compliance calendars for all environmental tasks by end of 2011
An Enviance client since 2005, FirstEnergy started by entering tasks in the system to create compliance calendars for use by environmental managers to track and plan compliance activities. With FirstEnergy’s personnel receiving proactive notifications and completing tasks on time, management was fully supporting utilization because daily, routine compliance was transparent and reportable. The company expects to have compliance calendars for all its environmental tasks by the end of 2011. FirstEnergy has also deployed the Enviance GHG solution, and will be using it to report emissions data to the EPA.
The programs for which FirstEnergy currently uses Enviance include SPCC, Title V, NPDES, SARA, dredging, and other general regulatory reporting tasks and obligations. FirstEnergy’s corporate office runs reports to show task completion statuses, as well as tasks that will be due in the upcoming months. In addition, the company’s plants run numerous reports for their operations, such as fugitive dust reports and inspection forms. Now achieving 100% of environmental reporting deadlines using the Enviance System, FirstEnergy continues to grow the System to improve its operational performance. In fact, FirstEnergy is rolling out use of the Enviance System for operational environmental compliance at all of its generating facilities.
“Enviance ensures that FirstEnergy’s regulatory responsibilities are remembered and fulfilled. As personnel are transferred or retiring, the Enviance System helps maintain institutional knowledge, while also improving the knowledge transfer process. In essence, Enviance helps us maintain environmental compliance obligations independent of personnel changes throughout our company.”
