OSHA Names Top 10 Workplace Safety Violations for 2019

A hazardous bucket with text about the top workplace safety violations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently revealed the top 10 workplace safety violations for 2019. Notably, hazard communications comes in at No. 2 on this year’s list.

A strong hazard communications program informs employees of potential hazards from chemicals in their workplace and educates them on effective precautions to prevent exposure. To help organizations ensure they properly provide their employees these resources, OSHA put forth its Hazard Communication Standard, which outlines a systematic approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on Globally Harmonized System (GHS) labels and safety data sheets (SDS)

Despite this, many companies fail to provide proper training or are missing or use outdated SDS explaining on-site hazardous chemicals. In fact, OSHA reported 3,671 citations in 2019 for hazard communications.

Protect Employees With Better Hazard Communications

With hazard communications being a top area identified in OSHA citations, organizations should ensure their hazard communications program adequately informs and protects employees from dangerous chemicals. Although some organizations rely on manual processes and paper records to manage their hazard communications program, this approach is error prone and slow. In addition, managing and updating SDS information takes time away from training and reinforcing to employees how to access and review information about the chemicals in their work area.

Finding detailed information is critical to EHS staff and employees when looking to protect themselves from chemical hazards, and the quality of that information is critical to accuracy. To improve their hazard communications program, many companies have turned to SDS management software with managed content.

With a robust SDS management software, such as Enviance’s SDS Vault, organizations can collect and transform chemical information directly from the manufacturer to assure users can quickly find the information they need. Users can create customized GHS labels and summary sheets to meet the requirements of a specific location, and SDS management software even includes real-time regulatory database to ensure compliance.
