Retail Industry Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Compliance

Retail Industry Blog-1

A press release titled RILA brings AI to Compliance caught our attention today. The Center for Retail Compliance, which helps retailers of all types and sizes comply with environmental regulations by providing retail-specific education and tools to improve environmental compliance, launched a new tool to help improve and accelerate compliance for retailers.

Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) created the Center for Retail Compliance (CRC) to provide easy to understand and use resources supporting environmental compliance specialized for retailers. The CRC is a value-added resource and community covering a wide range of topics like regulations, news, training, program management, and sustainability. The CRC website claims in the past decade, retailers have been fined upwards of 270 million dollars for hazardous waste and other environmental violations.

They provide free, easy to understand downloadable environmental management system (EMS) guidance tools to help you get started developing an EMS. They just launched an AI and Analytics Advisor to help assess and optimize your retail compliance program.

It is good to see content like this available to retailers large and small. We are proud of our work in the retail industry providing software to track and measure environmental information that improves compliance results for retail organizations. Recently, an Independent Research Firm Verdantix named Walmart the Winner of the 2018 International HSE Innovation Award in the consumer products and retail category for its big data environmental compliance project implemented across 7,000 sites.

In addition to this award, a case study from the proceedings of the Water Environment Federation (WEFTEC) titled “Managing Walmart’s Stormwater Infrastructure through Big Data When it Rains, It Doesn’t Have to Make you Poor:  Streamlining Stormwater Infrastructure Management with Information Systems” is available from WEF.

Retailers big and small need guidance and appropriate information management strategies to underpin the creation and operations of their environmental management system. As an EMS matures, an environmental management information system (EMIS) becomes critical to measure progress and communicate improvement to stakeholders.  The Center for Retail Compliance’s CRC Advisor is a welcome addition to the options available to retailers to help improve environmental compliance.
